(Detroit, MI, August 16, 2011) Hot on the heels of a sold-out celebrity attended red carpet premiere in Detroit, CornerStore, the movie, was the # 2 film in the country this weekend based on a per screen average! Variety publishes its list of top movies in the country every Monday. Variety uses data from Rentrak, the film industry’s standard and most respected source for theatrical box office data around the world. Rentrak collects data directly from theatre owners and operators, as well as distribution companies.
Based on its box office success, CornerStore has been held-over indefinitely past its initial run at the AMC Star Southfield, 25333 W. 12 Mile Rd, Southfield Mi 48034 (888) 262-4386 . Just added: AMC Star John R 32289 John R. Road, Madison Heights, MI (888) 262-4386 with shows starting Friday. Please call theaters for show times.
“CornerStore ranked #2 in the entire US on a per screen average, averaging $12,743 for the weekend. Most films average between $1,000-$3,000 per screen on weekends. In the film industry, two numbers get all the attention. The first is total gross revenue and is usually focused on the worldwide blockbusters. That number is really for bragging rights between studios. The number that really gets looked at in the film industry is the “per screen average”. That tells how well a movie is connecting with its audience and pulling them into the theatre.” Robert Evangelista, Shotown Pictures
“CornerStore” is a fun, lighthearted comedy, filmed in Detroit by Joe Doughrity and Dwight Patillo. It chronicles one eventful summer day at a convenience store on Detroit’s Six Mile Road. Owned by the Jenkins family, the store is operated by Earl, a handsome, middle class, full-time father of 2 young adults–his son Gerard, an aspiring chef, and daughter Gail, a fun-loving yet sneaky twenty-something. The eccentric customers are the real stars of this PG-13 (pending) rated comedy. From winos to gangsters, thieves to neighborhood kids, a LOT can happen on the corner. The film features Roger Guenveur Smith (“American Gangster”, “Deep Cover” & “Do the Right Thing”); Judge Mathis (Detroiter, TV star); Trick Trick (rapper, member of Puremichigan.org campaign); Dwele (R&B star, Detroiter) and a special guest appearance by Tommy Hearns (boxing champion, Detroiter).
Tom Long/ Detroit News Film Critic says the following about CornerStore: “An affectionate, irreverent and goofy upbeat portrait of urban Detroit, “CornerStore” is “Clerks” meets “Barbershop” at the “Car Wash”. Made-in-Detroit director Joe Doughrity, who wrote the script with Dwight E. Patillo, marches a parade of recognizable characters through a day in the life of an urban neighborhood convenience store. Hustlers abound, the street chatter is endless and entertaining, and the acting is surprisingly fluid.” Tom Long’s full review link: http://bit.ly/DetroitNewsMovieReview
